Who this treatment is for
Laser hair removal works on melanin in the hair shaft, so it is most effective on hair that contains pigment — black, brown and dark blonde. It is safe across all skin tones, including deeply pigmented Type VI skin, when used by a trained therapist on the correct wavelength.
- Clients tired of constant shaving, waxing, threading or epilating — laser is the most effective long-term solution.
- Ingrown hairs and razor bumps — particularly common on intimate, neck and underarm areas, and very responsive to laser.
- PCOS-related facial hair growth — laser slows and refines regrowth, though hormonal patterns may require ongoing maintenance.
- Pre-surgical hair removal where smooth skin is required for the procedure.
- Skin Type VI clients — our Nd-YAG protocol is genuinely safe for darker skin tones where many providers cannot treat.
- Sportsmen and women who want a clean look without daily upkeep — laser does the work once.
Why we recommend the Crack of Buttock
We recommend the Crack of Buttock because it is medical-grade laser hair removal on the gold-standard GENTLE MAX PRO PLAS+, safe on every Fitzpatrick skin type from I to VI. Permanent hair reduction is achievable; the question is whether the provider has the right machine, the training to set the right energy for your skin and hair, and the patience to run a proper course.
We do not use IPL. IPL is cheaper to buy but slower, less effective, and unsafe on darker skin tones. GENTLE MAX PRO PLAS+ dual-wavelength laser with dynamic cooling costs significantly more per pulse but delivers the result we promise. Every therapist treating you is certified directly by Candela, the manufacturer.
How the Crack of Buttock works
Laser hair removal works on the principle of selective photothermolysis: a specific wavelength of light is absorbed by melanin in the hair shaft, heating the follicle to the point where it can no longer produce hair. The surrounding skin absorbs less of that wavelength and remains undamaged — provided the right energy is used.
Only hairs in the active growth phase (anagen) are vulnerable to laser at any given moment, which is why a full course takes 6-8 sessions spaced weeks apart — we are catching different hairs each time as they cycle. After a full course, permanent hair reduction of 80-95% after a full course, with hair regrowing finer and lighter.
The treatment protocol
Every Crack of Buttock session follows the same protocol:
- Consultation and patch test — at your first appointment we confirm the wavelength, energy settings and the number of sessions estimated for your hair colour, skin type and treatment area.
- Skin prep — the area must be clean-shaven (within 24 hours) with no moisturiser, deodorant or self-tan applied.
- Eye protection — both client and therapist wear wavelength-specific protective eyewear throughout.
- Cooling — the GENTLE MAX system delivers a cryogen spray immediately before each pulse, protecting the skin surface and making treatment more comfortable.
- Pulse delivery — we work systematically across the marked zone, adjusting energy in real time based on skin response.
- Soothing — we finish with a calming aloe gel and SPF; the area can be slightly red for 30-60 minutes.
- Aftercare brief — written aftercare, scheduled next visit, and the patch-test record updated.
In the room: what you'll experience
The sensation is often described as "a hot elastic band snap" with the cryogen masking most of the heat. Sensitive areas like the bikini line and underarm feel sharper than thicker-skinned zones like calves. We adjust energy in real time — speak up if anything is too intense.
The session itself is fast. A full leg takes about 45-60 minutes; a bikini line 15 minutes; an underarm 10 minutes. The skin may feel warm and look slightly pink for an hour or two afterwards, then settles. Tiny "pepper-spot" hairs may shed over the following 7-14 days — this is normal and expected.
Results timeline
A full course of Crack of Buttock produces:
- After session 1 — 10-25% permanent reduction, with shedding of treated hairs over the following 1-2 weeks.
- After session 3 — visible thinning; remaining hairs are noticeably finer and slower to grow back.
- After the full course (6-8 sessions) — 80-95% permanent reduction. The remaining hair is finer, lighter and grows back significantly slower.
- After 12 months — most clients need only occasional maintenance (once or twice a year), particularly on hormone-influenced areas like the face.
Aftercare
Laser aftercare is more involved than other treatments and affects whether the result holds:
- Avoid sun exposure for 4 weeks and apply SPF 50+ daily — sun-tanned skin cannot be treated and increases pigmentation risk.
- No saunas, steam rooms, hot tubs, hot yoga or vigorous exercise for 48 hours — the skin needs time to settle.
- No deodorant for 24 hours (underarm sessions); no perfumed products on the treated zone for 48 hours.
- Shave between sessions as needed. Do not wax, pluck, thread or epilate — laser needs the root intact to work on the next session.
- Mild itching, redness or "pepper-spot" hair shedding for 7-14 days is normal — it is the treated hairs leaving the follicle.
- Book the next session at the right interval — too early and we hit the same growth-phase hairs; too late and we lose efficiency.
Safety, contraindications and patch testing
We will not treat over recent tans (sun or self-applied), tattoos, active infections, skin cancers or moles you have not had checked, during pregnancy, or if you are taking photosensitising medication such as isotretinoin (Roaccutane) within the last 6 months, certain antibiotics, or St John's Wort. Always disclose medications and recent sun exposure at the patch test.
A complimentary patch test is required at least 24 hours before this treatment. If you have not had one with us, book the patch test slot first.
